Demitri's first game review: Sonic Generations (HD Version)

Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most iconic game characters in the whole world, has a bad reputation in video games, that's what I can say about him, ever since Sonic X hit the US, his games downgraded, I call this the "4Kids curse" in which every sonic game with the 4kids cast would suck (though the voice actors in my opnion were very good and I grew up with them) though that curse was broken with Unleashed, in which in my opnion was a good game, but it would be the last time we would see the 4Kids actors dub their characters as they were replaced with new ones in Sonic Colours, another great sonic game, but I thought the game was kinda slow.

So to comemorate his 20th anniversary, SEGA released Sonic Generations which suprisingly people had hype for this game opposed to the traditional hype for the next Modern Warfare.

To start the game review I would like to talk about the story.

Sonic Generations' story is the worst piece of this game in my opinion, the game's story is full of plotholes and has almost nothing to talk about, Generations is those kind of "Forget the Story just beat the Freaking game" kind of game, the room for this bit is empty as majority of the story only features sonic, tails, classic sonic and classic tails talking to each other while classic just keeps his mouth shut and just gives a smile for everything, that or sonic's friends being freed, for me it needed more work into it, it doesn't explain points such as why is sonic in the white background, how did Classic Sonic appeared out of nowhere and Classic Tails how in god's name did he appear in the game's story? Generations' story is uninteresting and doesn't deserve to be remembered.

But the game's stage design is beautiful, a lot of living colors and a lot of detail in each stage from alternate routes to stage hazards, though Sky Sanctuary is beautiful, it's stage design is terrible, especially with Modern Sonic as his controls are very slippery, it feels like there is a f****ing banana peel on sonic shoes, the character design is okay, but it looks awful in the PS3 and Xbox 360 version, they are very blurry and you can note how everything is darker, the PC though fixes that so I suggest for picking up the PC version of this game and play it with a PC compatible Xbox controller, I like how it's fluid the stages and how it has a lot of colour like if it was a box of confetti, each stage feels different and recreates that feel from different sonic games such as when Sonic was escaping from the police (What a great example you give to children, Sonic) or Planet Wisp (The colors feel so right) or the cybernetic Scrap Brain Zone.

Now shifting the focus on gameplay, there are two types of gameplay on Sonic Generations: The classic and modern gameplay; Classic plays similar to the genesis games, a 2D platformer, these stages are nostalgic and simple to play, but then comes the problem, may I introduce : THE GOD SPINDASH!
The God Spindash is very overpowered, it litteratly blasts sonic at full speed with out the need of gaining speed, want to be number 1 at the speedrun ranking? God Spindash the level all the way!
Now to modern gameplay, modern sonic's gameplay has a full focus on speed and plays similar to sonic unleashed, where the 3D stages at somepoint become 2D and I had more fun playing with him rather than classic, maybe it's because I appreciated Sonic Unleashed, and once you completed the story mode, you get the ability to unlock Super Sonic to play in the game, Super Sonic, which I think it was a nice addition but in my opnion it consumes to much of those damn rings with modern sonic.

Sound is great, especially the songs featuring remixes of previous sonic games, Sega did a great job with the songs and how it changes of pace and tune depending on the sonic you use, it feels right and very well composed, but I think the Time Eater final boss song is too cliche and non satisfying trying to be a Sephiroth's theme wannabe, the voice acting is actually good, the new sonic voice actor actually got that feel from the character and it's an improvement on Drummond and Griffith's voice acting and I'm suprised how they hired the voice actor of Ezio Auditore and Chris Redfield for him, Tails actually sounds more grown-up and boyish than his previous voice actor which sounded girlish being voiced by Kate Higgins which does Sakura in that crappy Naruto anime and Tina Armstrong in Dead or Alive and Kate does also a good job at doing Classic Tails by making him sound younger and it's an improvement on her Colors voice acting since that tails voice sounded like a teenage girl trying to fake a boy´s voice.

The controls are very simple and it has nothing to worry about, and there is omochao for everything and believe it or not omochao is less annoying, I´m not kidding, though a thing that once bugged me on the game was the item shop as you needed to buy the shield and eletricity power-ups in there, my question is why? Couldn´t you just put it preset? Oh well, moving on.

What makes Sonic, a very enjoyable character? Well there is the speed, the attitude, but most importantly his foes.

Sonic had many foes through the decades and to comemorate the characters birthday, they return once again to face him.

The game has three boss battles and three rival fights, the boss battles are fights that need to be unlocked by completing 3 side quests (I will explain to you later) in the game, Boss fights usually involves having you control Sonic to defeat huge enemies such as Perfect Chaos and Egg Dragoon, while Rival Battles are fights against enemies usually at sonic's size such as Metal Sonic (which is my fave character) and Shadow, though what I think that the game lacks are proper fights to Classic Sonic, he only has 1 boss fight and 1 rival fight, while Modern has 2 boss fights and 2 rival fights.

Now to the side-quests, the side-quests serve as a chore for the players to complete them so they can gain keys to unlock boss battles for the game, some can be enjoyable (like the Tails sidequest for Classic Sonic), some makes the person feel that getting a job is better than doing this crap (like the Knuckles sidequest for Modern Sonic) and some makes the person confused of why SEGA even made that mission for the game (I'm talking to you Cream the Rabbit).

Overall, Sonic Generations is a good experience for Sonic fans who were desiring for a good game, though they could have made that game more entertaining as it's lenght is incredibily short, the controls could have more precision and get Sky Sanctuary fixed!

I give the game a 8/10

And for those who don't own a Xbox 360 or PS3, there is the 3DS version which plays differently from the HD one and in fact, it's very good too, though Classic Sonic fans will be pissed that classic sonic can use homing attack, oh Sega, making fans hate you since 2006.
